Muhanga: 12 People, Including 5 Women, Arrested for Mugging and Robbery

On Sunday, February 16, seven young men and five women were arrested in the city of Muhanga, Muhanga District, on suspicion of robbery. All 12 suspects are currently detained at the Nyamabuye Police Station.

Their arrest follows complaints from Muhanga residents who had been reporting incidents of muggings and theft. Some residents, who had been victims of these crimes, expressed their gratitude to the Rwanda National Police for taking action, hoping it would bring them relief, as they were the ones who had alerted the authorities.

One resident from Gahogo Cell stated:
“I appreciate the police for arresting some of those who ambushed us while returning home. Last Tuesday, as I was leaving Kabgayi Basilica after visiting a patient, I was mugged and had my phone stolen. The fact that some of them have been arrested is good news. I hope the police can also capture the others because there are many more out there.”

Southern Province Police Spokesperson, SP Emmanuel Habiyaremye, confirmed that all the suspects were apprehended in Gahogo Cell, Nyamabuye Sector.

He stated:
“They are detained at the Nyamabuye Police Station. The men are suspected of robbing people by ambushing them, while the five women are suspected of being accomplices by providing them shelter and storing stolen goods for them.”

SP Habiyaremye also warned individuals engaging in criminal activities, including robbery, to be cautious, as the Rwanda National Police is committed to fighting crime and ensuring the safety of citizens and their property.

He further emphasized that the police value their collaboration with residents, as timely information sharing helps in preventing and stopping crimes before they escalate into major issues.
