Trump Files $15 Billion Lawsuit Against New York Times Over Defamation Claims
By The Inspirer.
President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is filing a $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing the outlet of defamation and libel and calling it a “virtual mouthpiece” for the Democratic Party.
The lawsuit follows a New York Times report about a sexually suggestive note and drawing allegedly given to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday in 2003, which appeared to bear Trump’s signature. Trump and his aides have denied any involvement in the note’s creation.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump accused the Times of spreading “false statements” about him, his family, and his businesses.
“Today, I have the Great Honor of bringing a $15 Billion Dollar Defamation and Libel Lawsuit against The New York Times,” Trump wrote. “The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!”
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Tampa, Florida, claims the Times has engaged in a pattern of “false, malicious, defamatory, and disparaging” reporting designed to damage Trump’s campaign and legacy.
The complaint cites previous legal battles Trump has waged against other media companies, including ABC News and CBS News, which his lawyers say led to multimillion-dollar settlements.
The filing also references a pending case against The Wall Street Journal over a story about Epstein’s personal letters. Dow Jones, the Journal’s parent company, has said it will “vigorously defend” its reporting.
Trump’s attorneys argue that the reputational harm caused by the Times amounts to billions of dollars, justifying their demand for $15 billion in damages.
The Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This is the latest in a string of high-profile legal battles between Trump and major U.S. media outlets, part of what the former president describes as an effort to “restore integrity to journalism.”
