Rwanda Police Steps Up Preparations for UCI Road World Championships

With just over two weeks before Rwanda hosts the UCI Road World Championships—the first ever on African soil—the Rwanda National Police is intensifying drills to ensure security and smooth traffic management during the global cycling event.

On September 4, 2025, police conducted their third field exercise along the 40–Onatracom–40 road circuit, testing logistics and coordination ahead of the championships scheduled for September 21–28. Earlier simulations were held in Kicukiro and at Police Headquarters in Kacyiru.

Police Spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga said the drills focus on installing barriers, securing pedestrian and vehicle access, deploying officers and youth volunteers, and escorting cyclists in coordination with motorcades.

“The aim is to execute these operations quickly and efficiently so that we minimize disruption to road users, while ensuring safety for athletes, officials, and spectators,” he said.

He added that Rwanda Police is committed to guaranteeing security not only along race routes but also nationwide.

Youth volunteers, who will assist police during the event, say they are eager to contribute. “We are proud that Rwanda is hosting this global championship. It is an honor and a great opportunity for us as young people,” said Alexia Uwitonze, the Kigali coordinator for the volunteers.

Residents who observed the latest drill expressed confidence in the preparations. “This exercise gave us a clear picture of how the event will look. I trust the police—they always deliver when Rwanda hosts major occasions,” said Amani Nzabahimana.

Businesswoman Sandrine Uwanyuzwe from Nyamirambo added: “Our role will be to follow the guidelines provided when the race passes through our neighborhoods.”

The World Championships are expected to draw about 5,000 officials and delegates, more than 15,000 international visitors, and 700 journalists from 124 countries.

Over 80 television networks will broadcast the races, potentially reaching more than 300 million cycling fans worldwide.
