Rwanda calls on older people to play a bigger role in national development
By The Inspirer.
Rwanda has urged older people to put their knowledge and experience to greater use in shaping the country’s development, stressing that they should not be viewed solely as recipients of social support.
Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Uwimana Consolee made the call on October 6, 2026, during national celebrations of the International Day of Older Persons in Rutunga Sector, Gasabo District.
The celebrations also marked the launch of a month dedicated to citizen participation in planning and were held under the theme, “The contribution and experience of older people: a foundation for sustainable development.”
Uwimana said older people remain an important source of knowledge and guidance for families and the wider community. She said recognizing their contribution, protecting their rights and encouraging the transfer of knowledge between generations are essential to building a stronger society.
She also called on families to take greater responsibility for caring for older relatives, particularly those facing hardship.
“Caring for older people is not the responsibility of the Government alone. It is also the responsibility of families, especially children towards their parents. No government programme can replace the love and commitment of children and grandchildren,” she said.
The minister encouraged Rwandans to prepare for old age early by saving through Ejo Heza and other social protection schemes.
She said Government programmes such as VUP, Ejo Heza and Community-Based Health Insurance are helping improve the welfare of older people and their families.
In Rwanda, people aged 65 and above are considered older persons.
