Rubavu District Engages Community in Tuberculosis Awareness Campaign

In celebration of International Tuberculosis Day, residents of Rubavu District and Rwandans at large participated in an educational session aimed at raising awareness and promoting proactive measures against tuberculosis.

On Friday, March 22, 2024, Rubavu District organized an event to mark International Tuberculosis Day, which is observed globally. The gathering was held in the Rugerero Sector, Rwaza cell, where residents from various villages came together to learn about tuberculosis.

Dr. Albert Tuyishime, the Head of Diseases Prevention and Control Department at Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) underscored the critical importance of early tuberculosis detection for effective patient treatment.

He urged residents to promptly seek medical attention upon noticing any tuberculosis symptoms.

Dr. Tuyishime emphasized the ongoing need to educate community health workers about tuberculosis and equip them with comprehensive knowledge of the disease’s symptoms and risk factors.

“The first step is identifying patients and educating them promptly. We have discussed strategies here to continue supporting individuals who exhibit symptoms by referring them to healthcare providers. The second step involves educating community health workers, who play a crucial role in identifying tuberculosis symptoms and guiding patients to appropriate medical care,” Dr. Tuyishime explained.

He further elaborated on the treatment process, highlighting that early identification of tuberculosis cases significantly reduces mortality rates. The treatment routine typically comprises two phases, with the first phase lasting two months and the second phase lasting four months, totaling six months of treatment.

Dr. Tuyishime also addressed various risk factors associated with tuberculosis, including smoking, alcohol consumption, poor hygiene practices, and close contact with infected individuals.

The World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Rwanda underscored the urgency of addressing tuberculosis, citing its impact as comparable to that of HIV/AIDS, with millions of deaths recorded globally due to tuberculosis surpassing HIV/AIDS-related deaths.

Collaborative efforts are thus essential in the fight against tuberculosis, particularly as Rwanda progresses toward eliminating the disease.

Rwandans were encouraged to remain vigilant in seeking timely diagnosis and treatment to effectively combat tuberculosis.

“We are committed to advancing our collaborative efforts to effectively combat this disease,” Dr. Tuyishime said.
