Ministry of Youth official arrested for Corruption Allegations

In a recent update, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has apprehended Patrick Niyigena, a Ministry of Youth and Arts official overseeing business innovation and talent development, on bribery charges.

Niyigena stands accused of soliciting bribes and exploiting his position for personal gain. According to an official statement from RIB, Niyigena was detained on March 21 under suspicion of soliciting illicit favors and misusing his authority.

Investigations suggest that Niyigena manipulated the selection process for the prestigious Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition, known as the YouthConnect Awards 2024, allegedly favoring specific candidates in exchange for financial benefits.

It is alleged that he demanded monetary compensation from contestants in return for advancing their applications in the competition. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full extent of Niyigena’s alleged wrongdoing.

RIB encourages individuals with any information related to corruption associated with the YouthConnect Awards 2024 or previous editions to come forward and assist with the inquiry.

Currently detained at the Nyarugenge RIB station, Niyigena awaits the transfer of his case to the prosecution for further legal proceedings. If found guilty, he could face imprisonment for a period of five to seven years and/or a fine equivalent to three to five times the amount of the bribe involved.

Moreover, for abuse of authority, Niyigena may face imprisonment ranging from seven to 10 years, along with a fine ranging from Rwf 5 million to Rwf 10 million.
