New Housing Project in Nyabisindu to Uplift Families from Informal Settlements

The City of Kigali has announced the continuation of a project in Nyabisindu, located in Gasabo District’s Remera Sector, that will see 1,600 families relocated from informal settlements into modern housing.

This information was released in a statement by the City of Kigali, which stated that the Government of Rwanda, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and the City of Kigali, is moving forward with efforts to improve urban housing conditions in Nyabisindu.

According to the statement, the project, already underway in Gasabo District, will be implemented across four neighborhoods in Remera Sector: Nyabisindu, Amarembo I, Amarembo II, and Ibuhero.

The project will cover an area of 38.54 hectares and will accommodate more than 1,600 families previously living in informal housing.

The statement added, “This project follows another initiative that redeveloped housing in Mpazi, Gitega Sector, Nyarugenge District, where 688 families were recently settled into new homes.”

Minister of Infrastructure Jimmy Gasore, explaining the project, said it reinforces the Rwandan Government’s goal of sustainable urban development.

He stated, “This is not just about building houses; it’s about dignity, expanding infrastructure for our citizens, and reducing unplanned settlements. Every Rwandan deserves to live in a place they can be proud of.”

Samuel Dusengiyumva, Mayor of Kigali, described the Nyabisindu project as a significant step in implementing urban redevelopment plans in the city.

He said, “Taking the Mpazi project as an example, we are building sustainably and in a climate-resilient way, in collaboration with our residents, ensuring no one is left behind.”

Voices from the Community

Kanzayire Josiane, a resident of Amarembo II, expressed her relief and optimism about the project, calling it a solution to the hardships they’ve faced.

“We’ve lived in these old houses for a long time. We’re proud of this project and see it as a bright future for our children. We have no doubt that our lives are about to change for the better,” she said.

The project is expected to be completed within one year.
