APR and Police teams win the volleyball championship

The Rwandan Volleyball Championship concluded on Sunday, May 11, 2025, with APR VC winning the men’s title and Police VC taking the women’s crown.

APR VC claimed the trophy after defeating Police VC 2-1 in the final series.

In the three playoff matches between the two teams, Police VC won the first match in straight sets (3-0), while APR bounced back in the second match with a 3-1 win, leveling the series at one game apiece.

This led to a decisive third match, where APR VC narrowly defeated Police VC in a thrilling five-set game (3-2) to secure the championship title.

On the women’s side, Police VC made history by winning their first-ever championship title after overcoming APR VC 2-1 in the final series.

APR started strong, taking the first match 3-1, and looked poised to clinch the title in the second game. However, Police VC mounted a comeback to win the second match 3-2, forcing a decisive third match.

In that final showdown, Police VC showed dominance, beating APR VC 3-1 and capturing their first national title in history.

The journey to the championship began after the regular season concluded, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs.

In the men’s category, Police VC topped the regular season standings and faced fourth-placed REG VC in the semifinals, while APR VC, who finished second, went up against third-placed Kepler VC.

Both Police and APR comfortably won their respective semifinal matchups in straight sets (2-0) to set up the final clash.

In the women’s division, Police VC also topped the regular season standings, followed by APR, RRA, and Kepler.

Police faced Kepler in the semifinals and easily advanced with a 2-0 series win. Meanwhile, APR VC defeated RRA 2-0 to reach the finals.

Although the national volleyball league has concluded, competitions continue. Starting May 20, the annual Memorial Rutsindura Tournament will take place in Huye District.

In early June, Rwanda will host the international GMT Tournament in remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, with several foreign teams expected to participate.

In early July, the annual Liberation Day Tournament will be held to commemorate Rwanda’s liberation.
