ISOC Rwanda Celebrates Digital Literacy Milestones in Bugesera Schools

Internet Society Rwanda Chapter (ISOC Rwanda) recently celebrated significant achievements in enhancing digital literacy among teachers, students, and the surrounding community in Bugesera district.

The event took place on June 6, 2024, at G.S Kibungo, one of ISOC Rwanda’s partner schools, which now hosts the ‘Kibungo Internet Access Center’ (KIAC), a facility that has transformed the educational landscape for students, teachers, and nearby residents.

Emmanuel Mfitumukiza, Chairperson of ISOC Rwanda, highlighted various initiatives, including Safer Internet campaigns that have reached 5,200 people in Bugesera district.

“Today, we are here to celebrate achievements. Our goal is to continue collaborating with our country to enhance digital literacy, especially in remote areas, promoting inclusive education,” said Mfitumukiza.

“We have built two ICT rooms in Bugesera district with 48 computers and internet connectivity, trained over 900 people—half of them teachers—and our activities highlight our goal of using the internet as an infrastructure to transform lives.” Mfitumukiza says.

Godfrey Musoni, Sector Education Inspector of Ntarama sector, lauded ISOC Rwanda’s efforts.

“The community day is significant. ISOC Rwanda has greatly enhanced digital literacy by training our teachers to use ICT tools. Initially, teachers feared computers, but now even those born before computers are proficient. ISOC’s support has been crucial in boosting digital skills in our schools.” He said.

During the event, certificates of recognition were awarded to teachers, partner schools, Safer Internet Clubs, and members of ISOC Rwanda.

Recognized institutions included G.S St Tite Butereri and the Safer Internet Club at G.S Nyirarukobwa. The Best Teacher award went to Elasto Hagumimana from G.S Nyirarukobwa for his efforts in helping students to undergo scratch competitions.

Theophile Nkundingabo, headteacher of G.S Nyirarukobwa, recounted the improvements since partnering with ISOC Rwanda in 2015.

“They provided us with four computers and a printer, which facilitated test preparation and improved students’ performance. Parents have since contributed funds to buy papers.”

Donatille Yankurije, headteacher of G.S St Tite Butereri in Ruhuha sector, also shared the positive impact at her school.

“Before ISOC’s intervention post-COVID-19, we had only two computers for all administrative and educational activities. ISOC built us a computer room with 20 computers, a projector, and a printer. Teachers, especially in primary school, were trained and are now proficient in using computers and the internet. We use CAMIS for school reports, Google Forms, and Google Sheets, making communication and administrative tasks more efficient.” she said.

Victor Ndonnang, Senior Manager of Community Engagement at ISOC in Africa, commended the work of ISOC Rwanda in Bugesera district saying: “Access to computers and the internet can truly transform lives. We will continue to work together to ensure the internet is for everyone.”

Gashumba Jacques, Bugesera District’s Director of Education, encouraged the community, especially students and young people, to use the internet positively. He urged ISOC Rwanda to promote good internet practices and protect children’s online safety.

“We are happy that the internet helps our children learn and supports our community in doing business,” said Gashumba.
