Mpox Disease Found in Bugesera: 2 Out of 13 Tested Patients Confirmed Positive

In Bugesera District, two patients have been confirmed with Mpox disease out of thirteen suspected cases. These patients are currently receiving treatment at Nyamata and Ntarama Hospitals.

As confirmed by Dr. Jean Marie Vianney Sebajuri, the Director General of Nyamata Hospital, on Monday, August 5, 2024, the two confirmed cases are being treated at Nyamata Hospital and Ntarama.

Dr. Sebajuri stated, “Among the thirteen suspected cases, only two have been confirmed. Recent tests conducted in the past few days show that four out of the five tested at Ntarama are not infected, except for one who is under observation.”

“We are still awaiting results for eight more tests to determine the outcome, and these individuals remain in isolation.” He added.

Dr. Sebajuri mentioned that thirteen people were initially suspected of having the disease, but only two have been confirmed and isolated, while the others are being monitored by health centers.

“We are helping the community by conducting tests at health centers, as our hospital team has been trained and equipped with necessary tools provided by the National Laboratory. Results are usually available within two days.” He said,

Dr. Sebajuri also noted the challenge of limited isolation rooms for suspected cases, which has led to reliance on health centers with smaller rooms.

“The hospital has limited and small rooms, so we are using the rooms at health centers.” He said.
