Agricultural Triumph: Rwanda’s 2024-A Season Witnesses Remarkable Harvest Surge

The 2024-A crop season in Rwanda has sparked excitement among farmers nationwide, propelled by favorable weather conditions that yielded abundant crops, reminiscent of the previous year’s success.

This surge in agricultural productivity is poised to surpass expectations, particularly in maize, with forecasts estimating a production volume double the usual output.

Typically, Rwanda witnesses a maize production of 350 to 400 thousand tons during this season, but the current projections range from 650 to 800 thousand tons, as announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Ildephonse Musafiri.

Reflecting on the preceding year’s challenges, Minister Musafiri emphasized the critical need for increased budget allocation to agriculture and animal husbandry. During the 18th national cabinet meeting, he advocated for a 10% allocation from the national budget, a step up from the existing 8%, to meet the burgeoning demand for food. This foresight laid the groundwork for the proactive measures implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources to elevate agricultural production.

One pivotal strategy involves expanding the cultivated area. Minister Musafiri highlighted untapped lands from previous years and urged regional authorities to encourage landowners to cultivate these areas or hire individuals capable of doing so.

Despite shrinking available land due to construction and housing developments, the ministry launched a robust campaign urging residents to utilize non-utilized land for seasonal crop cultivation.

A shining example of this initiative is evident in Bugesera District, where 700 hectares of non-traditionally cultivated land have been transformed in the 2024-A crop season.

Notably, 200 hectares initially designated for airport construction were allocated to the Mareba Sector Cooperative of IGMGM, currently cultivating maize and rice.

In an interview with IGIHE, Bamporiki Edouard, the cooperative’s president, shared insights into their success, emphasizing the transformative impact of having a large, previously uncultivated land for maize cultivation.

“It has been immensely beneficial; previously, we struggled with cultivating uneven terrain, making tasks like cleaning and fertilizing challenging. Now, with access to expansive and fertile land for maize cultivation, not only have we secured a bountiful harvest for consumption, but we also anticipate surplus for sale, showcasing our enhanced production visibly.” Bamporiki said.

The cooperative has experienced a substantial increase, from 30% to 70%, in the area under cultivation, highlighting the efficacy of the ministry’s campaign.

Minister Dr. Musafiri attributed the season’s heightened production to a second strategic reform—the restructuring of agricultural practices in valleys, particularly in the Eastern Province. Shifting from a 30% agriculture and 70% livestock model to a balanced 70-30 ratio not only improved livestock quality but also significantly increased maize production.

Looking ahead, Minister Dr. Musafiri emphasized the need to conclude January with the establishment of a fair pricing mechanism. This initiative aims to ensure a balance that benefits both buyers and sellers, avoiding compromise and fostering a fair marketplace.

Additional programs, including irrigation, wetland management, and rehabilitation through the CEDAT project, are slated to further bolster production. These initiatives underscore Rwanda’s commitment to innovative and sustainable agricultural practices, positioning the nation as a regional leader in agricultural resilience.

As Rwanda celebrates this agricultural triumph, the commitment to harnessing untapped potential and implementing forward-thinking strategies stands as a testament to the nation’s dedication to food security and sustainable development.
