AWS launches Outposts in Rwanda, bringing hybrid cloud infrastructure closer to government and enterprises

KIGALI, Rwanda – 15 April 2026. Amazon Web Services has officially launched AWS Outposts in Rwanda, marking a significant expansion of advanced cloud infrastructure in the country and strengthening Rwanda’s position as a regional digital innovation hub.

The announcement confirms that AWS Outposts can now be shipped and installed in data centres and on-premises environments across Rwanda, enabling government institutions and enterprises to run cloud services locally while remaining connected to AWS infrastructure in nearby regions.

AWS Outposts is a fully managed hybrid cloud solution designed to extend AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to virtually any on-premises or edge location. This allows organizations to build and run applications on local infrastructure while maintaining seamless access to the broader AWS cloud ecosystem.

According to AWS, the deployment is expected to support workloads that require low-latency processing, local data residency, and real-time operational capabilities. These include critical systems such as healthcare platforms, industrial automation, retail point-of-sale systems, and other applications that depend on immediate data processing or on-site integration.

“We are excited to bring AWS Outposts to Rwanda as we continue to deliver advanced cloud services to meet our customers’ business needs,” said Jyoti Ball, General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at AWS.

“The Government of Rwanda as well as customers who have workloads that require low latency, data processing, or data storage will now benefit from AWS Outposts as it enables enhanced service delivery and helps customers scale their businesses. AWS Outposts will ensure that citizen and customer data in Rwanda is securely stored and processed, which is important for highly regulated industries and data sovereignty requirements.”

The launch is expected to have a strong impact on Rwanda’s digital transformation agenda, particularly in strengthening data governance and supporting national goals around cloud adoption and smart public service delivery.

Rwanda Information Society Authority welcomed the development, describing it as a milestone in advancing inclusive digital services and strengthening Rwanda’s innovation ecosystem.

Industry players say the introduction of AWS Outposts could accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence, real-time analytics, and advanced cloud-native applications in both the public and private sectors.

One of the key partners in the deployment is Sand Technologies, a data and AI company working with governments and enterprises to build advanced decision-making systems. The company has been instrumental in supporting the rollout in Rwanda, particularly in enabling infrastructure readiness and applied AI development.

AWS Outposts is part of a broader strategy to extend cloud capabilities closer to customers who require local processing power while still benefiting from global-scale cloud services. The solution is particularly relevant for regulated sectors such as government, healthcare, and financial services, where data sovereignty and compliance are critical.

With this launch, Rwanda joins a growing list of countries adopting hybrid cloud infrastructure to modernize digital services and support innovation-driven economic growth.
