Rwanda Set to Host First UCI Road World Championships in Africa

Rwanda is set to make history this month as it becomes the first African nation to host the UCI Road World Championships.

The 98th edition of the global cycling competition will take place in Kigali from September 21 to 28, bringing together riders from more than 100 countries.

The championship will cover a 267.5-kilometer course with 5,475 meters of elevation gain, making it one of the most challenging routes in the event’s history. Rwanda will field 23 riders.

Valentin Bigango, first vice president of the Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY), said preparations are nearly complete. “We are at about 96 percent readiness. The national team’s training program has been implemented, and we are confident Rwanda can achieve good results,” he said.

Coach Sepoma Felix noted that the team held training camps in France, Musanze and Bugesera. He expressed hope that this year a Rwandan cyclist could finish in the men’s elite category for the first time.

Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire confirmed that 107 countries have registered 915 riders. She said that for the first time, time trials will begin indoors at BK Arena.

Police spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga said security arrangements, including barriers and escorts, are in place to ensure safety for participants and fans.

Among Rwanda’s athletes, Xaverine Nirere will compete in her third world championship, while 19-year-old Pacifique Byusa will make his international debut.

The event marks a milestone for Rwanda and the continent as cycling’s biggest stage arrives in Africa for the first time.
