Rwanda coffee fetches $450 per kilogram at international auction
A specialty coffee produced in Huye District has sold for $450 per kilogram, equivalent to about Rwf670,000, highlighting the growing international recognition of Rwanda’s high-quality coffee.
The coffee, produced by K-Organics Ltd in the Southern Province, achieved the price at the 66th Best of Rwanda international coffee auction organised by the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) on October 22, 2026.
The sale underscores the premium that buyers are willing to pay for coffee that meets high quality standards and undergoes careful processing.
Evariste Karangwa, owner and head of K-Organics Ltd, said the achievement would encourage further investment in premium coffee production and help improve farmers’ livelihoods.
“I am pleased with this price because it will help me further develop high-quality coffee farming and improve the livelihoods of farmers in general,” he said.
The auction featured 31 coffees selected from 320 entries received by NAEB, following assessments by coffee quality experts.
NAEB Director General Claude Bizimana said the event demonstrated the value of collaboration across the coffee value chain, from farmers to processors and exporters.
“What we are presenting today is evidence of the results of working together. Every price achieved at the auction reflects our appreciation of Rwanda’s exceptional coffee quality on the international market and the continued investment in developing coffee farming,” he said.
Buyers from several markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Asian countries and African nations, participated in the auction.
NAEB organises the annual Best of Rwanda auction to recognise farmers, processors and exporters producing high-quality coffee. The event also aims to raise the profile of Rwandan coffee internationally, expand farmers’ access to premium prices and strengthen the country’s coffee sector.
