Rwanda’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) has accredited more than 90 election observers to monitor the country’s 2026 local government elections, which begin on Saturday, October 24.

NEC Chairperson Oda Gasinzigwa announced the figures during a press briefing on Friday, October 23, outlining preparations for the elections, which are expected to conclude on November 30.

The observers come from various institutions, including non-governmental organisations, the National Commission for Human Rights, political parties, faith-based organisations and foreign embassies.

“We value election observers. We see significant benefits in their reports, which help ensure the rights of Rwandans are respected and enable electoral institutions to improve future elections,” Gasinzigwa said.

She added that accreditation involves reviewing applicants’ conduct and eligibility, with those who meet the requirements approved to observe the electoral process.

NEC urged accredited observers to familiarise themselves with the rules governing election observation and understand what they are permitted and prohibited from doing.

Gasinzigwa also highlighted the contribution of international observers, noting that reports from organisations including the African Union and the European Union had helped NEC improve electoral processes.

The local elections begin at village level before progressing through other administrative levels, culminating in the national-level elections scheduled to conclude on November 30, 2026.
