Rwanda’s parliament is once again led by a woman

After swearing in the Prime Minister, President Paul Kagame also swore in the Members of Parliament, who then elected the Speaker of Parliament, Honorable Gertrude Kazarwa.

The ceremony took place at the Parliament building. MP Nizeyimana Pie, leader of the UDPR party, was the first to announce his candidacy. He emphasized his education, experience, and the expertise he gained during the previous parliamentary term. He also noted his good working relationship with women, asserting that since Parliament has been led by women for a while, he too could lead it effectively.

On the other hand, Honorable MP Nsengimana Philbert nominated Honorable MP Gertrude Kazarwa, arguing that everyone should vote for her because it is a great privilege to be led by a woman. He highlighted her qualifications, experience, and the eight years she served as a Senator, including her role in the Commission for the Fight Against Genocide Ideology.

Gertrude Kazarwa, a member of the PL party, was elected Speaker of Parliament, defeating Honorable Nizeyimana Pie.

The elected Vice Presidents are Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana, in charge of Administration and Finance, and Honorable Uwineza Beline, in charge of Legislation and Government Oversight.

Honorable Fazil Harerimana was nominated by Honorable Uwamariya Odette, and he was the only candidate for the position.

Honorable Uwineza Beline was also the sole candidate for her position and was nominated by Honorable Muhakwa Valens.

After forming the Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies, the elected members were immediately sworn in before the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.
