EAC Heads of States meeting’s highlights on the Peace process in Eastern DRC

EAC Heads of State commitment to ensuring Peace and Security in Eastern DRC was re-affirmed by their keen participation in the High- Level Consultative Meeting of the Summit of EAC Heads of State on the Peace process in Eastern DRC.

The meeting chaired by H.E Évariste Ndayishimiye, the Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State and President of the Republic of Burundi was held in Shamar El Sheikh, Egypt on the sidelines of the meeting of United Nations Framework on Climate Change (COP-27).

The meeting was attended by H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda,H.E Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the Republic of Tanzania and Rt. Hon. Jean- Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenje, the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) , representing H.E President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi and EAC Secretary General Hon (Dr.) Peter Mathuki.

HIGHLIGHTS

1. The Heads of State reviewed the recent development in North Kivu, particularly the resurgence of violence and called on cessation of hostilities to give chance to the political negotiations due to commence from 16th November 2022, in November, 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.

2. The Heads of State agreed to appoint a Technical Advisor from each Partner State to support the Facilitator of the EAC Peace process.

3. The Heads of State reaffirmed the mutually reinforcing mandates and the complimentary role of the Luanda and EAC – Led Peace Processes and urged consideration of a possibility to harmonise both processes and a final decision will be made during the proposed Peace Summit.
