Rwanda’s U17 national team, Amavubi, started their CECAFA U17 tournament on the wrong foot, falling 2–0 to hosts Ethiopia.
The match, the first for both sides in this year’s competition, was played on Saturday, 15 November 2025, in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia began strongly, pressing high and earning two early corners, but Rwanda’s defence held firm in the opening minutes.
The breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Dawit Kasaw scored after an impressive run by Huzeyfa Shafi, who had just slipped through Rwanda’s backline.
Clearly dominating play, Ethiopia doubled their lead moments later from a cross delivered from the left side. Positioned perfectly, Huzeyfa struck a powerful shot past Rwanda’s goalkeeper.
Before halftime, two minutes were added, giving Rwanda a chance to respond. In the 45+2 minute, Mugunga Daniel fired Rwanda’s first real attempt, but his powerful shot went over the bar.
Ethiopia went into the break leading 2–0.
In the second half, Rwanda made early substitutions—Jayden Shema Heylen and Bagabo Enzo came on for Iradukunda Patrick and Nshimiyimana Olivier. The changes brought more energy, and later Kwihangana Elyse replaced Mugiraneza Bizimana Didier, helping Rwanda push forward, though still unable to find the back of the net.
The match ended 2–0 in favour of Ethiopia, leaving Rwanda with a difficult start to the CECAFA U17 campaign.
Amavubi will return to action on Friday, 21 November 2025, when they face Kenya.
