RICA Issues Warning Against Illegal Maize Purchases

Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA) has issued a stern warning to individuals and businesses involved in purchasing maize produce without proper authorization.

RICA emphasized that engaging in maize trading is permissible only for individuals or companies possessing valid documentation issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

This advisory comes in the wake of the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s announcement regarding revised maize prices. According to the Ministry’s directive, the standard price per kilogram of maize with a moisture content ranging from 13.5% to 18% is set at 400 Rwf.

Similarly, maize produce with a moisture content between 19% and 25% will be priced at 350 Rwf per kilogram.

Furthermore, unprocessed maize will also adhere to revised pricing, with a kilogram of unfiltered maize produce featuring a moisture content between 13.5% and 18% priced at 311 Rwf, while the same quantity of maize produce with a moisture content between 19% and 25% will cost 260 Rwf.

RICA has underscored the importance of adhering to legal regulations, stating that the transportation of maize via vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, or any other means must be accompanied by a valid purchase agreement and receipt.

The agency’s statement reiterated that all maize production should be collected and sold exclusively in designated areas, emphasizing that any unauthorized collection or purchase elsewhere is strictly prohibited.

In addition to warning buyers, RICA has urged traders to comply with the newly revised maize prices as announced by MINICOM. Conversely, farmers have been reminded of their responsibility to ensure the quality of their produce throughout the harvesting, drying, transportation, and storage processes.
