Local Security Organs, ‘INSHUTI Z’UMURYANGO’ trained on GVB Prevention

Local Security Organs, Community Policing, and the Friends of a Family ‘INSHUTI Z’UMURYANGO’ were trained by Réseau des Femmes Oeuvrant pour le Développement Rural   on Gender Based Violence (GBV) concepts, and how they can support the victims.

The project runs its activities in Gasabo District, Kinyinya sector and in Nyarugenge District, Mageragere sector, according to Xaverine Uwimana, Legal Representative of Réseau des Femmes Oeuvrant pour le Développement Rural.

It aims at building capacity for Local Security Organs (District Administration Security Support Organ (DASSO), Community Policing, Youth Volunteers and the Friends of a Family ‘INSHUTI Z’UMURYANGO’ on Gender Based Violence (GBV) concepts, and how they can support the victims.

“This project was sponsored by UN Women, and it aims to fight family conflicts, we found that training of families is not enough, and we decided to train local security organs and other concerned people, over the period of 1 year, we have been training these people on GBV prevention, tackling problems related to GBV, including accompanying the victims in local authority and at Isange One Stop Center, (ISOC) to get help,” Uwimana said.

She explained that Mageragere sector of Nyarugenge district was chosen following authorities’ call for intervention as they have a big number of family conflicts and Sexual Gender-Based Violence.

Betty Murebwayire, Corporate Services Division Manager in Nyarugenge said that the organization has contributed a lot in preventing family conflicts and SGBV over the last one year of their activities in the district.

“77 families who lived illegally have managed to understand the consequences of illegal marriage, and they went through legal marriage. The project also helped to reduce teen pregnancies and they approached many families whose lives were led by conflicts to help them understand gender equality principle,” Murebwayire said.

Julia Habumukiza, one of INSHUTI Z’UMURYANGO in Mageragere sector said that she managed to help three families to pursue legal marriage after being trained

“I gained a lot from the training, I managed to help families discover the conflicts they had had, I learned that they could not understand the role of being legally married and three of the families passed civil marriage on December 30, 2022,” Julia explained.

Jeanne Umumararungu, Community Policing in Kankuba cell, Mageragere sector said that they gained knowledge to explain GBV between the families living in conflicts.
