MINEMA Warns of Deadly Consequences of Illegal Mining in Ngororero
By The Inspirer.
The Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) has sounded the alarm on the perilous impact of illegal mining activities in Ngororero District, leading to devastating landslides and loss of life.
Adalbert Rukebanuka, Director General of Planning, Policy, and Risk Reduction at MINEMA, highlights the alarming trend of illegal mining exacerbating landslides in Ngororero and Muhanga districts over the past five years. These illicit activities have resulted in fatalities, infrastructure damage, and significant financial burdens on government rehabilitation efforts.
Rukebanuka emphasizes MINEMA’s comprehensive oversight role in identifying threats to public safety, pinpointing illegal mining as a major catalyst for disasters in the region.
Mayor Christophe Nkusi acknowledges the persistent challenge of illegal mining despite the presence of licensed mining companies. He underscores ongoing community awareness campaigns to educate residents about the risks associated with illegal mining, while also fostering partnerships with legitimate mining companies to provide employment opportunities and skill development for local residents.
However, despite efforts to curtail illegal mining, a substantial portion of the population remains involved in these activities due to the allure of higher profits compared to legal mining operations.
SP Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, Police spokesperson for the Western region, highlights the grave dangers posed by illegal mining, including loss of life and environmental degradation. He urges individuals to adhere to legal procedures and obtain proper licenses to ensure their safety and protect the environment.
Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) monitors the implementation of mining regulations through collaboration with local government and security agencies to curb illicit mining practices.
As illegal mining continues to pose significant threats to lives and the environment, MINEMA’s warning underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to address this ongoing challenge in Ngororero and beyond.
