Rwanda’s Battle Against Malaria Enhanced by Anti-Mosquito Drones

Anti-mosquito drones have emerged as a powerful tool in Rwanda’s ongoing fight against malaria, a disease that wreaks havoc across sub-Saharan Africa, transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito.
Since January 2020, Rwanda has been deploying these small aerial devices as part of its national anti-mosquito drone program.
Managed by the Ministry of Health, these drones are instrumental in combating the spread of malaria by targeting mosquito populations.
Phocas Mazimpaka, an official in charge of malaria prevention through Integrated Vector Management (IVM) at the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC), underscores the effectiveness of drones in malaria control.
“Preliminary results demonstrate a significant reduction in mosquito density, thereby contributing to decreased malaria cases in targeted areas,” Mazimpaka explains.
These drones are strategically deployed in marshy regions like Rugende and Kabuye marshlands in Kigali.
Mazimpaka highlights the pivotal role of drones in the country’s healthcare system, citing substantial progress in malaria eradication.
Recent statistics from RBC, released during an international conference on malaria, reveal a more than 10% decline in malaria cases over the past five years in Rwanda. Correspondingly, malaria-related deaths have also decreased proportionally. Mazimpaka attributes these positive outcomes to drone usage, facilitating the identification and treatment of mosquito breeding sites.
The Ministry of Health plans to expand drone applications beyond mosquito control to disseminate awareness messages in the fight against malaria.

Equipped with larvicidal substances, these drones traverse pre-mapped routes, efficiently spraying insecticides over mosquito breeding sites, including marshes, rice fields, and stagnant waters, where larvae thrive.
Mazimpaka elaborates on the operational efficiency of drones, covering around forty hectares in just 16 minutes. Video analysis and mapping of infested areas are swiftly executed, followed by insecticide treatment.
Highlighting the complementary nature of drone technology with traditional malaria control measures, the Ministry of Health emphasizes early diagnostic tests and the distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to at-risk populations.
In addition to anti-mosquito drones, Rwanda employs drones for blood bag delivery and medical product transportation to remote hospitals, enhancing healthcare accessibility.
Rwanda’s steadfast commitment to malaria eradication aims to eliminate the disease entirely by 2030, underscoring the nation’s proactive stance in combating public health challenges.
