Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolds in Gaza: Over 10 Children Lose Limbs Daily in Brutal Conflict

A stark and distressing report from Save the Children reveals a harrowing reality in Gaza, where more than 10 children per day, on average, have lost one or both of their legs over the past three months since the conflict erupted. The toll of the violence has resulted in over 1,000 children undergoing amputations since October 7, according to UNICEF.

The dire situation is exacerbated by a healthcare system in Gaza that is crippled by the conflict, facing severe shortages of doctors, nurses, and crucial medical supplies, including anesthesia and antibiotics, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Despite 36 hospitals in Gaza, only 13 remain partially functional, operating on a fluctuating basis dependent on access to fuel and basic medical supplies. The nine partially functional hospitals in the south are strained, operating at three times their capacity, grappling with critical shortages of essential supplies and fuel. Additionally, a mere 30% of Gaza’s pre-conflict medical professionals are still working, further deepening the crisis.

Save the Children’s Country Director for the occupied Palestinian territory, Jason Lee, describes the overwhelming situation faced by medical professionals, witnessing children in immense pain without the necessary equipment and medicines to treat them. The vulnerability of small children caught in explosions is highlighted, emphasizing the increased risk of major, life-changing injuries due to weaker necks, torsos, and undeveloped muscles.

Lee condemns the suffering, killing, and maiming of children as a grave violation, calling for perpetrators to be held accountable. Urgent action by the international community is deemed essential to uphold responsibilities under International Humanitarian Law and prevent further atrocities.

A definitive ceasefire is emphasized as the only solution to end the killing and maiming of civilians, allowing desperately needed humanitarian aid, including critical medicines for wounded children, to reach the scale and locations required.

In the three months since October 7, Gaza’s Ministry of Health reports a devastating toll with 22,000 Palestinians killed and 57,000 injured. Save the Children, committed to supporting Palestinian children since 1953, is actively engaged in providing essential services and support. Their team in the occupied Palestinian territory is tirelessly working to preposition vital supplies and find ways to deliver assistance to Gaza.
