Hope and Homes for Children brings Christmas cheer to teen mothers in Kicukiro
By Elias Hakizimana.
As Christmas approaches, Hope and Homes for Children Rwanda has once again extended a gesture of love and solidarity to teen mothers and their families in Kicukiro District, Gikondo Sector.
Hope and Homes for Children specializes in deinstitutionalization, placing children from orphanages into families, supporting family-based care, and addressing root causes of family breakdown.
On December 20, 2024, the organization hosted a special event to celebrate the festive season with its beneficiaries, emphasizing hope, inclusion, and the spirit of giving.
The ceremony featured shared meals, music, and entertainment, creating a joyous atmosphere for the young teen mothers and their families.

The event also included the distribution of fortified flour and other nutritious food items to support the health of the mothers and their children. These gifts, which aim to combat malnutrition, are critical during the festive season when many families face heightened financial strain.
In an interview with The Inspirer, Innocent Baryinyonza, M&E Manager at Hope and Homes for Children Rwanda, highlighted the importance of this annual celebration.
“This event is a time to restore hope for teen mothers, helping them overcome the trauma they have faced. It also allows us to sensitize parents, local authorities, and the public to embrace these young mothers and their children instead of discriminating against them,” he said.
Currently, the organization supports 350 beneficiaries, including 250 teen mothers who have been part of its programs for years, as well as 100 new participants, including pregnant teens, enrolled since July 2024.
Beyond addressing stigma, the event provided a platform to advocate for stronger parental and community support to prevent repeat pregnancies and ensure the well-being of the young mothers and their children.

The teen mothers expressed their gratitude for the organization’s ongoing support.
“The gifts for our children come at the right time to help us celebrate the festive season with better nutrition,” said Noella Uwase Kamikazi from Gatenga Sector.
Ruth, another beneficiary and mother to a 2.5-year-old child, shared a cautionary tale about the consequences of peer pressure.
“I got pregnant during a Christmas party with friends. The advice from Hope and Homes for Children Rwanda has been invaluable in helping me make better choices,” she said.
Through initiatives like these, Hope and Homes for Children Rwanda is fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment, offering teen mothers a chance to reclaim their futures and celebrate the season with dignity and hope.
