Court Dismisses Fatakumavuta’s Appeal

Nyarugenge Intermediate Court has rejected the appeal of journalist Sengabo Jean Bosco, popularly known as Fatakumavuta, and ruled that he will remain in custody for 30 days pending investigation due to substantial evidence supporting the charges against him.

Fatakumavuta is facing charges that include defamation, harassment through the use of a computer or computer network, discrimination, and other related offenses.

The alleged crimes were committed on various occasions using his YouTube channel and other social media platforms.

On November 6, 2024, the Kicukiro Primary Court had initially ruled that he be detained for 30 days pending investigation. Fatakumavuta and his legal team immediately appealed the decision to the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court.

On Monday, the court delivered its verdict on the appeal.

The presiding judge stated that the reasons Fatakumavuta presented to justify his release, which had been previously reviewed and dismissed by the lower court, did not hold merit. Instead, he was expected to point out flaws in the earlier court’s decision, which he failed to do.

Fatakumavuta had requested to be released on bail, citing his family responsibilities and the fact that his employer was willing to stand surety for him.

Fatakumavuta was arrested on October 18, 2024, by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on charges that include defamation and harassment through the use of a computer.
