Kigali set to host 2025 cycling world championships

Rwanda is in the final stages of preparation to host the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, which will take place in Kigali from September 21 to 28. It will be the first time in the event’s 103-year history that the competition is held in Africa.

The championships, usually staged in Europe, have only been organized outside the continent 11 times. Rwanda was awarded the hosting rights in 2021 after outbidding Morocco, underlining its growing reputation in cycling and event management.

Why It Matters

Officials say Rwanda’s strong cycling culture and track record in organizing international events were decisive factors in securing the championship.

State Minister for Sports Rwego Ngarambe said cycling is part of daily life in Rwanda and has gained prominence through competitions such as the Tour du Rwanda, which has run for over two decades.

The Kigali event will attract more than 900 riders from over 100 nations, including Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar, the current world number one and 2024 world champion. Organizers also expect 15,000 visitors and around 5,000 race officials and commissioners.

Citywide Preparations

Authorities have been upgrading roads and infrastructure while working with hotels, traders, and service providers to meet the expected demand. The Ministry of Sports has also engaged businesses to showcase products and services during the competition week.

Kigali City spokesperson Emma Claudine Ntirenganya said the event will not only bring excitement to residents but also create jobs and business opportunities. She noted that the races will pass through several neighborhoods, giving the public a chance to follow the competition up close.

Anticipated Impact

The championship is expected to generate significant exposure for Rwanda, with more than 80 broadcasters covering the event and an estimated 330 million viewers worldwide. Local officials believe the experience will also inspire a new generation of young Rwandan cyclists.

Security and traffic management are already being coordinated, with alternative routes and strict crowd control measures in place. Schools in Kigali will temporarily close, while businesses are encouraged to adjust operations to minimize disruption.

For Rwanda, hosting the 2025 Road World Championships is seen as both a sporting milestone and an opportunity to highlight the country’s capacity to welcome major international events.
