Kigali: Woman pours hot food (cassava leaves vegetables) on sleeping husband

A 38-year-old woman from Kimisagara Sector in Nyarugenge District is under prosecution for injuring her husband by pouring hot cassava leaves vegetables (isombe) on him while he was asleep.

Reports from Radio/TV10, say, the woman admitted to the act but claimed she did not intend to do it. She said she was driven by rage after finding her husband drinking with a sex worker in a bar.

The woman is being prosecuted by the Intermediate-Level Prosecution Office in Nyarugenge, and her case has been submitted to the Intermediate Court of Nyarugenge.

The prosecution says that the woman, a resident of Kimisagara Sector in Nyarugenge District, is accused of injuring her 40-year-old husband by pouring hot cassava leaves on him.

The incident occurred on March 31, 2025. According to the prosecution, “The woman had cooked cassava leaves. When they were boiling hot and her husband was asleep, she poured them on him, causing burns to his back and face. She immediately fled but was later arrested.”

The prosecution adds: “The suspect admitted to the crime and explained that she was overcome by anger after finding her husband drinking with someone she referred to as a sex worker.”

If convicted, the woman could face a prison sentence ranging from 6 months to 1 year, and a fine between 100,000 and 300,000 Rwandan Francs.

The law further states that if the offense is committed against a child, a parent, a spouse, or a person unable to defend themselves due to physical or mental conditions, the offender is liable to a prison sentence ranging from 1 to 3 years and a fine between 300,000 and 500,000 Rwandan Francs.
