M23 Rebel Group Faces Setback as Key Commanders Fall in Battle

On January 16, 2024, the M23 rebel group experienced a significant setback when the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) successfully eliminated two high-ranking officers, escalating tensions in a region already marred by ongoing conflicts.

Lawrence Kanyuka, the political spokesperson for M23, confirmed the losses on the morning of January 17.

Kanyuka acknowledged that the attack deemed a breach of the ceasefire by the Kinshasa government, resulted in the demise of two vital commanders within the group.

While M23 refrained from officially disclosing the names of the fallen soldiers, reliable sources have indicated that one of them is Colonel Castro Elise Mberabagabo, responsible for intelligence and relations between M23 and its supporters.

Simultaneously, unconfirmed reports surfaced about the alleged injury of General Sultani Makenga’s advisor, Colonel Erasto Bahati, in a drone attack in Kitchanga on the same day.

Faced with this escalation, M23 conveyed its determination to retaliate, interpreting the DRC government forces’ attack as a provocative act.

The loss of key leaders may have profound implications for the dynamics of this confrontation, especially since the Southern African Development Community (SADC) army recently joined the DRC forces in this conflict.
