78% of Crimes in Rwanda Involve Suspects Under 40

New statistics reveal that 78 percent of all crimes prosecuted by the National Prosecution Authority (NPPA) between June 2023 and June 2024 involved suspects under the age of 40.

Speaking during the conclusion of the judicial year on Monday, September 2, Prosecutor General Angelique Habyarimana disclosed that the NPPA received 90,493 case files from investigators, of which 90,079 were processed—representing a completion rate of 99.5 percent.

“46,018 cases were brought to court, while 44,061 were dismissed,” Habyarimana stated.

The conviction rate for prosecuted cases stood at over 93 percent, meaning that more than 42,796 cases resulted in convictions. Notably, 78 percent of the individuals prosecuted were under 40 years old.

“These are prime years for contributing to the country. So, it is important for relevant institutions to find ways of paying attention to this young population in order to reduce crime rates,” Habyarimana emphasized.

The report also indicated that theft and voluntary assault were the most common crimes during the 2023/2024 judicial year, accounting for 57 percent of all reported crimes.
