President Kagame Attends COP29 Opening Ceremony with Global Leaders

On Tuesday, November 12, President Paul Kagame arrived at Baku Stadium in Azerbaijan, where he was welcomed by President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He joined other world leaders for the opening ceremony of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

On the sidelines of COP29, President Kagame held discussions with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, focusing on strengthening economic cooperation across various sectors to benefit both Rwanda and Kazakhstan, according to a post from Urugwiro Village on X (formerly Twitter).

President Kagame also met with Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah, the Crown Prince of Jordan, where they discussed the mutually beneficial relations between Rwanda and Jordan.

Rwanda, as part of COP29, will advocate for a new global climate finance target of at least $1.3 trillion annually under the “new collective quantified goal on climate finance” (NCQG) proposal.

“COP29 marks a pivotal opportunity to accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis,” read a statement from the Office of the President.

While in Azerbaijan, President Kagame met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan on the sidelines of COP29.
