Transgender people banned from the U.S. military

The United States military has announced that it will no longer accept transgender individuals into its ranks and that those who had plans to transition will also be barred.

This was stated in an announcement posted on the U.S. military’s official X account on February 14, 2025, declaring that transgender individuals will no longer be accepted into the armed forces.

The statement also emphasized that the military has halted all medical procedures related to gender transition for service members currently in the U.S. military, meaning they will not be allowed to transition while serving.

The announcement further stated that these regulations would take immediate effect. However, it clarified that those who had already transitioned in the past while serving in the military would be allowed to continue their service, but no new transitions would be permitted within the ranks.

This decision follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on January 27, 2025, which legally recognizes only two genders—male and female—in the United States.

Trump initially banned transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military in 2017. However, President Joe Biden reversed this decision shortly after taking office in 2021. Now, in his second term, Trump has reinstated the ban.

Currently, the U.S. military has approximately 15,000 transgender service members.
