Gasogi United no-show sparks dispute over match rescheduling

What was expected to be a high-stakes clash in Rwanda’s topflight league instead turned into one of the most controversial moments of the season after Gasogi United failed to show up for their match against Rayon Sports, handing their rivals a 3-0 forfeiture victory.

The incident unfolded on the evening of March 22, 2026, at Amahoro Stadium, where fans had gathered anticipating a competitive encounter.

Instead, referees were forced to call off the match after waiting in vain for Gasogi United to appear, marking the first such forfeiture in the Rwanda Premier League in nearly eight years.

Behind the dramatic no-show lies a dispute over a last-minute decision by Rwanda Premier League to shift the match from its original venue and time—Kigali Pelé Stadium at 3:00 PM—to a late-night kickoff at Amahoro Stadium.

The change was designed to align with a CAF Champions League quarterfinal involving Al-Hilal SC, allowing football fans to attend both fixtures on the same day. The move, reportedly endorsed by FERWAFA, was framed as beneficial for the sport and the country’s image.

However, Gasogi United, led by its president Kakoza Nkuriza Charles, objected strongly. The club argued that the rescheduling did not follow established regulations, particularly regarding the timing and formal notification of such changes.

It maintained that it was not properly informed within the required timeframe and that the decision imposed additional logistical and financial burdens, including extended accommodation, feeding, and late-night transport for players.

League authorities countered that communication was conducted through officially recognized channels, including email, and within acceptable timelines.

They further noted that similar adjustments had been made in the past—even involving Gasogi United—without incident. As tensions escalated, the league warned that failure to honor the fixture would lead to disciplinary action.

Gasogi United ultimately stood its ground, choosing not to take the field. By 10:15 PM, match officials had no option but to declare the game forfeited, awarding all three points to Rayon Sports and imposing a Rwf 2 million fine on the absent side.

Reports have also suggested that behind the scenes, Gasogi United had sought compensation to accept the changes, though this claim has not been officially confirmed by the club.

The fallout leaves Gasogi United in a precarious position. Another forfeiture this season could result in relegation to the third division, significantly raising the stakes of the dispute.

KNC has since indicated that the club will appeal the decision to FERWAFA, setting up a legal challenge that could test the enforcement of league regulations and the balance of power between clubs and governing bodies.

For Rwandan football, the episode underscores ongoing tensions around governance, communication, and commercial interests, raising broader questions about how the game is managed as it continues to grow in profile both domestically and on the continental stage.
