By The Inspirer.

A 20-year-old man has died and another aged 19 sustained injuries after being buried by a collapsing slope at a mining site in Rutsiro District.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 1, 2026, in Mukura Sector, Kagano Cell, Kabacuzi Village, during heavy rainfall.

According to local authorities, the two youths were taking shelter near a mining structure when the hillside gave way, trapping them under falling earth.

Mukura Sector Executive Secretary Ndayambaje Emmanuel said the collapse happened suddenly as the area was hit by intense rain.

“They had gone to shelter from heavy rain near the mining site when the slope behind them collapsed. We found one already deceased, while the other had fainted and was immediately taken for medical care,” he said.

The deceased’s body was transferred to Murunda Hospital for post-mortem examination, while the injured victim was taken to Rugabano Health Center for treatment.

Authorities have urged caution around mining sites, particularly during rainy seasons, as investigations into the incident continue.
