Rusizi: A nurse under investigation for raping a student who came for medical treatment

A 29-year-old nurse from Rusizi District has been arrested by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on suspicion of forcing a 19-year-old female student into sexual intercourse when she came for a medical check-up at Nyakabuye Health Center.

The incident occurred on September 15, 2024, in Mpoga Village, Kamanu Cell, Nyakabuye Sector, Rusizi District. The student, who is in her second year of secondary school, reported to her parents that the nurse had raped her while she was in the examination room.

The Executive Secretary of Nyakabuye Sector, Kimonyo Kamali Innocent, confirmed to IGIHE that the girl immediately filed a complaint with RIB, and the suspect was promptly arrested.

He stated, “The girl alleges that she was raped while seeking medical attention. She informed her parents upon returning home and then went to file a complaint with RIB.”

Executive Secretary Kimonyo commended the girl for swiftly reporting the case of sexual violence. He urged, “We encourage other girls who experience sexual violence not to remain silent but to report the incidents immediately so they can receive justice.”

The nurse accused of the crime is currently detained at the Nyakabuye RIB Station, and investigations are ongoing.

Law No. 68/2018 of August 30, 2018, concerning offenses and penalties in general, stipulates that anyone who engages in sexual intercourse with another person without consent, using force, threats, deceit, authority over them, or exploiting the victim’s vulnerability, commits a crime.

If convicted by a court, the offender is sentenced to imprisonment for no less than ten years but not exceeding fifteen years, and a fine ranging from one million to two million Rwandan Francs.
