Police detain Rayon Sports Coach Olivier Karekezi

Rwanda National Police Rayon have confirmed they are holding Rayon Sports Head Coach Olivier Karekezi over offences related to cyber crime.

Olivier Karekezi former Rwanda National team skipper, and professional footballer with Swedish side Helsingborg’s IF in 2005, after leaving his native club APR FC ,was indicted on Wednesday by police over crimes related to cyber offences.

Assistant  Commissioner of Police, ACP Theos Badege confirmed that Olivier Karekezi is in Police custody.

“It is true right now Olivier Karekezi is under Police custody, where he has to explain himself over offenses related to cyber crimes,” he said.

When asked whether the crime is somewhat related to the death of Karekezi’s assistant Coach Hamadi Katauti Ndikumana who passed away on wee hours of Tuesday night and buried on  Wednesday, ACP said that the case is not related.

Efforts to reach out to the management of Rayon Sports FC for a comment where not possible by press time because the club was mourning the death of the club assistant coach Hamadi ‘Katauti’ Ndikumana

Kerekezi obtained a UEFA ‘A License’ in 2014 after he coached a junior team in Sweden.

He replaced DjumaMasudi who spent two years but surprisingly threw in the towel after leading Rayon to the league title on top of the 2015-16 Peace Cup.

He played for APR fc from (1998-2004), Helsingborg (2005-2007), Hamarkameratene (2007-09), Osters IF (2010-2011), before returning to APR FC in (2011-2012, but then joined Bizertin Athletics Club (2012-13), Trelleborgs FFV (2014) before retiring in RaaIdrettsforening.
