PM Nsengiyumva reaffirms Rwanda’s commitment to fighting genocide ideology

Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva has reiterated that Rwanda will continue to prioritize the fight against genocide ideology, describing it as a responsibility the country cannot abandon.

He made the remarks during the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, following testimonies from survivors in Ngororero District.

According to accounts shared at the event, thousands of Tutsi who had sought refuge at the former MRND office in Ngororero were attacked by Interahamwe militia, with many killed in mass violence that included burning victims after initial assaults.

Survivors also raised concerns over signs of persistent genocide ideology in parts of the district, citing isolated incidents reported during the current commemoration period.

Another testimony indicated that killings in the area had begun prior to the downing of President Juvénal Habyarimana’s plane, challenging narratives that link the start of the Genocide solely to that घटना.

In his address, Nsengiyumva stressed that combating genocide ideology and its consequences remains a key national priority, given Rwanda’s history of division and violence.

He noted that remembrance is not only about honoring victims but also about reinforcing a collective commitment to preventing a recurrence.

The Prime Minister also called for continued vigilance, particularly during the 100-day commemoration period, warning against complacency.

He further referenced findings from a 2025 survey by the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE), which ranked Ngororero District 25th in terms of unity and resilience, underscoring the need for sustained efforts to strengthen social cohesion.
