Nyagatare: Survivors of 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi receive homes worth Rwf 113 million

Nyagatare District authorities have handed over six newly constructed houses to six families of survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in a government-supported initiative aimed at restoring dignity and improving living conditions.

The houses, valued at RWF 113 million, were officially handed over on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Kinihira Village, Nyagatare Cell, Nyagatare Sector.

Beneficiaries said the homes mark a major turning point in their recovery journey, after years of hardship linked to unstable housing and economic vulnerability. Uwimana Jacqueline said owning a permanent home restores hope and stability after years of struggling with rent.

Rwabukambizi Jean Damascene, aged 78, expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda, saying the house gives him dignity and peace after long periods in rented accommodation, and pledged to maintain it properly.

Mukamwiza Betty, aged 40, said she had endured 11 years of financial pressure from rent payments alongside personal trauma, noting that the new house gives her renewed hope and a chance to rebuild her life.

Nyagatare District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Matsiko Gonzague, said the housing program for genocide survivors continues in partnership with the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE), with additional beneficiaries expected to be supported in the coming year.

He said the objective is to ensure survivors live in dignity in safe housing that enables long-term recovery and self-reliance.

IBUKA in Nyagatare District reports that 142 survivor households in the district are still awaiting housing support.
