Rayon Sports and Gorilla FC played out a 1-1 draw at Kigali Pelé Stadium on Wednesday in the first leg of the 2026 Peace Cup semi-finals, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the return fixture.
Gorilla FC made a bright start and took an early lead in the ninth minute from a well-worked set piece. Mosengo Tansele delivered a precise free kick from the right, and Kanamugire Roger rose to head home past the goalkeeper.
Rayon Sports responded with increased attacking intent, creating a series of chances, but were initially denied by a solid performance from Gorilla FC goalkeeper Muhawenayo Gad.
The breakthrough for Rayon Sports came in stoppage time of the first half when they won a free kick just outside the penalty area. Ndayishimiye Richard stepped up and struck a superb effort directly into the net to restore parity and send the sides into the break level.
The second half saw both teams push for a decisive goal in a tightly contested and physical encounter. Despite several promising opportunities, neither side was able to find the winner, with tensions rising on the pitch and referee Nizeyimana Isiaka issuing multiple yellow cards.
Rayon Sports had a late chance to snatch victory from another set piece, but Ndayishimiye’s attempt was blocked by the defensive wall.
The result leaves everything to play for in the second leg scheduled for next week, when APR FC will host Etincelles FC, while Rayon Sports will take on Gorilla FC in the decisive return match.
