Nigeria: Over 90 dead after fuel tanker explosion

More than 90 people have died and over 50 others have been injured following a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State, Northwestern Nigeria.
The explosion occurred as crowds gathered around the tanker, which had crashed, in an attempt to collect fuel, according to police reports. Tragically, 94 people were killed on the spot, while many others sustained severe injuries.
This incident follows another fuel tanker explosion last month in Niger State, central Nigeria, which claimed the lives of 48 people.
Fuel tanker explosions are a frequent tragedy in Nigeria. In 2020 alone, 535 people died and more than 1,100 were injured in 1,531 recorded accidents involving fuel tankers.
