Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds has destroyed 11 houses in Ngoma District, Eastern Rwanda, damaging homes across four sectors and affecting an early childhood development (ECD) facility.

The storm struck on the afternoon of September 29, 2026, according to Ngoma District Mayor Nathalie Niyonagira.

The affected houses are located in Jarama, Sake, Murama and Mutenderi sectors, with a total of 11 houses reported destroyed. The storm also damaged 191 roofing sheets, according to the district authorities.

Niyonagira said an ECD facility was also affected when the roof of its kitchen was blown away.

“Among the things damaged were houses in Jarama, Sake, Murama and Mutenderi sectors. A total of 11 houses were destroyed, involving 191 roofing sheets. The kitchen of an ECD facility for children was also affected after its roof was blown away, although it has since been repaired,” Niyonagira said.

The district has urged residents to take precautions as strong winds are expected to continue.

“We are still urging residents to secure their roofs because we were warned that the winds could be strong. We ask them to do this quickly to protect themselves and their families,” the mayor said.

Families whose houses were damaged have temporarily been accommodated by neighbours as the district works with other institutions to assess the situation and prepare assistance for the affected households.

The damage comes as Rwanda continues to experience weather conditions that can bring heavy rainfall and strong winds during the ongoing rainy season.

Authorities have continued to encourage residents to strengthen roofs and take other precautionary measures to reduce the risk of damage from severe weather.
