MWC 2023: British-built AALTO Zephyr Shares Innovative Flying Tech Solutions for Internet Connectivity

The sky above Kigali was graced by the presence of AALTO’s Zephyr, a revolutionary high-altitude platform station (HAPS), as it took flight at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Kigali 2023.

This annual event, hosted for the second time in Rwanda’s capital, was officially inaugurated by His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, on October 17, 2023, and will run until Thursday, October 19, 2023.

AALTO, a company recently spun out of Airbus, is at the forefront of a new era in aerospace technology, aiming to conquer the stratosphere with their innovative flying machine, the Zephyr.

The Zephyr, a fixed-wing, solar-powered drone, has earned its reputation as the most persistent HAPS globally, promising eternal flight and extraordinary capabilities in mobile connectivity.

Jeff Smith, Head of Mobile Connectivity for APAC and Europe, described the Zephyr as a marvel born of 12 to 15 years of development within the Airbus Group.

“It’s basically a fixed-wing solar-powered drone that flies in the stratosphere, 20 kilometers above the Earth,” he explained. “This platform is now coming to the end of prototype development, and we will be able to offer multiple services from this platform.” Jeff explained.

The significance of AALTO’s presence at MWC Kigali 2023 cannot be overstated. Smith emphasized that their primary goal is to collaborate with mobile network operators to provide flexible, low-cost connectivity solutions to remote rural areas and in times of disasters or unrest.

“Aalto is here in MWC Africa to speak with mobile network operators about providing the ability to offer flexible low-cost alternative connectivity to remote rural areas where there are challenges in building towers, maybe due to terrain or cost,” he said.

The Zephyr essentially functions as a flying cell tower, seamlessly integrating into existing mobile operator networks.

 

“People can connect to our aircraft payload and have a seamless user experience,” Jeff added.

While AALTO doesn’t aim to become a mobile network operator itself, it serves as a vital link, bridging the gap in mobile connectivity.

AALTO’s Zephyr stands out in the industry with its unique characteristics. Compared to traditional terrestrial infrastructure, their services offer remarkable flexibility.

“We can be deployed for as short or as long as required, and then we can move to a new area and offer services,” Jeff Smith explained. This adaptability is a game-changer for regions with shifting connectivity needs. -He said.

Moreover, AALTO’s technology boasts minimal latency, making it an ideal alternative to existing satellite technology.

“The latency or delay of connection is very low, as we are very close to Earth at 20 kilometers high,” Jeff revealed.

As the world grapples with connectivity challenges, AALTO’s Zephyr emerges as a beacon of innovation, promising to bridge the digital divide and revolutionize internet connectivity in the stratosphere.

The skies above Kigali bear witness to the future of global connectivity, and it’s undoubtedly an exciting one.
