Man found dead in Rubavu lodge under mysterious circumstances

In Rubavu District, a man identified as Mpongo Dieudonné, originally from Rwamagana, was discovered dead inside a guest lodge.

The incident occurred in Gisenyi Sector, Bugoyi Cell, specifically in Isangano Village. News of Mpongo’s death emerged on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, around 3:30 PM.

According to the lodge manager, Mpongo checked in on April 30, 2025. However, he had not been seen since May 5. When staff decided to unlock his room on May 7 to check on him, they were met with the shocking discovery of his lifeless body.

Rubavu District Mayor, Mulindwa Prosper, confirmed the death, stating, “Yes, the man was found dead in a lodge. Preliminary reports indicate he had been inside for days without anyone knowing his whereabouts since May 5. Today, staff used a spare key to open the room, suspecting he may have left with the original one, only to find he had passed away. We consider it negligence that someone could stay in a lodge for two days without being checked on. That is why investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of death.”

Mayor Mulindwa urged lodge operators to be more proactive in engaging with their guests, monitoring for potential health issues, and implementing better tracking systems to ensure guest safety.

Mpongo’s body was transported to Gisenyi Hospital mortuary as investigations into the cause of death continue.
