M23 Rebels Take Control of Kamanyola Border in DR Congo

M23 rebels have begun controlling the Kamanyola border on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) side after entering the historic town.

At around 1 PM on February 19, 2024, the rebels seized control of this border, which connects the DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi.

On the night of February 20, M23 fighters entered Kamanyola but did not immediately take over the border.

On the morning of February 21, a brief skirmish occurred between M23 and Burundian troops, along with Wazalendo militia, who attempted to resist the advance.

As M23 entered the border area, the Congolese security forces guarding it fled.

Reports indicate that some Wazalendo fighters and Burundian soldiers were captured by M23.

A local resident stated: “Many Wazalendo and Burundian soldiers were captured and gathered in one place, as they had looted properties.”

Another resident claimed that Kamanyola is now peaceful under M23 control, alleging that they had suffered from violence by the Congolese army (FARDC) and its allies.

“We welcomed them, gave them milk and juice because they were tired and had rescued us,” the resident said.

Currently, Congolese troops from Bukavu and those previously stationed at the Kamanyola border have fled to the city of Uvira, which could soon fall into M23’s hands.

A resident in Uvira reported worsening conditions, with both civilians and soldiers fleeing into Burundi.

He added, “Gunfire is being heard in parts of Uvira, and people are escaping. Police and soldiers are fleeing to Burundi, carrying their weapons and equipment.”

Uvira is 27 kilometers from Bujumbura, about a 44-minute drive or a six-hour walk.

Meanwhile, in the northern front, clashes erupted in Kitsombiro, Lubero Territory, between M23 and government forces. The battle took place 30 km from Lubero-Centre, 75 km from Butembo, and 129 km from Beni.

The spokesperson for the Burundian army, Brigadier General Baratuza Gaspard, stated that Burundian forces deployed in the DRC continue their assigned operations.
