Kwibuka 24: Intwali Primary School pays tribute to former students and teachers, victims of genocide

The community of students, teachers, parents and neighbours of Intwali Primary School in Rwezamenyo Sector, Nyarugenge District yesterday May 24, 2018 gathered to honour the victims of Tutsi killed at the school ground in 1994.

Many Tutsi teachers and students were killed at this school during the 1994 genocide perpetrated against Tutsi.

Speaking during the commemoration event, Isaac Munyakazi, the State Minister in charge of Primary and Secondary Schools — who was the guest of honour — recommended other education institutions to take an example from Intwali Primary School that has been organising the commemoration since seven years ago, an activity which will help children or students value lives of their colleagues through getting rid of genocide ideology, and divisionism from tender age.

Giving her testimony, Assumpta Umurerwa, a survivor of the genocide, requested genocide perpetrators to reveal the places where the bodies of their relatives were  dumped so that they get a decent burial and receive due respect.

Sudi Kiwanuka, former teachers’ and students’ representative at Intwali primary school said that the commemoration has been organised by former students and teachers in the last seven years but is handed over to the school’s authority.

He promised the school to stay acting as a partner in such an activity.

Various dignitaries including Kayisiime Nzaramba, the Mayor of Nyarugenge District; and the senate vice-president Fatu Harelimana also participated in the commemoration event.
