Human Rights First Rwanda Association Stands Against Uganda’s Side on LGBTQ People

Millions of people around the world face human rights violations because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). These violations are often ignored or given insufficient attention.

The recent signing of the Anti-Homosexuality Law 2023 in Uganda by the president which has stiff penalties including the death penalty is against all Human Rights for the sexual minorities who are already a vulnerable group in that country. 

They are often forced to live in fear, shame, and hiding, and are abused, beaten, or even killed simply on account of their sexual orientation and gender identity because of who they are.  

“It is especially worrying in our region and in Africa where other countries could also follow suit by taking backward steps toward intolerance and hatred of the LGBTQ+ community. We applaud all of the extraordinary people around the world who make up the vibrant LGBTQ+ community, Despite the challenges they face Human Rights First Rwanda Association stands with them during this pride month that commenced on 1st June and will run throughout the month. The theme for Pride Month 2023 is ‘Rage and Resilience, reflecting the current global climate with the resurgence of anti-LGBT bills and laws.”

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience. The LGBTIQ community has a right to live a life of respect, dignity, and health.
