Countries hit with U.S. tariffs may retaliate

U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, while products from China have been subjected to an additional 10% tax. However, these countries are now considering ways to retaliate against the U.S.

The executive order signed by Trump states that the new tariffs aim to reduce the number of illegal immigrants and drug trafficking into the United States.

Just hours after the announcement, Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, declared that her country is prepared to retaliate by imposing higher tariffs on U.S. goods.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also stated that Canada will take strong measures against tariffs imposed on its exports to the U.S.

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that it will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization and consider its own countermeasures, though it did not specify the exact tariffs it plans to impose.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Today, I have implemented a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico, a 10% tariff on energy products from Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China.”

CNN reported that the tariff increases on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada could spark a trade war.

Mexico’s president has already instructed the Ministry of Finance to take tough measures to protect the country’s economic interests.

Reports indicate that both Mexico and Canada may impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from the U.S.
