Bugesera Teachers Fast-Track Quality Education with Acquired Skills in Remote Learning and Online Safety

Teachers from GS St. Tite Butereri in Ruhuha Sector, Bugesera district, are celebrating newfound skills acquired during a comprehensive five-day training program focused on remote learning tools, privacy, and digital footprint.

The training, which concluded on Friday, April 5, 2024, at GS St. Tite Butereri headquarters, marks a significant step in leveraging digital technologies within the education landscape.

The sessions covered a range of vital topics, including mastering remote learning tools such as Quizlet, Google Forms, and Kahoot for interactive and efficient lesson preparation and assessment.

Participants expressed enthusiasm for integrating these digital platforms into their daily teaching routines to streamline tasks and enhance learning outcomes.

Mathilde Mukabutare, a trainee, highlighted the practical benefits of the training, stating, “These skills will help us enhance our daily teaching activities. The time we used in papers and handwritten tasks will be saved as we can share courses and supervise tests remotely by using Google Forms.”

Elisa Dusabimana, currently teaching Mathematics and ICT, shared his newfound awareness of online privacy and its significance in the digital age.

“This is my first time learning about online privacy, a sensitive subject crucial for educators and students alike. The knowledge acquired will help me teach students and the community more effectively,” Dusabimana noted.

Aphrodis Mico, a Language and General Communication Skills teacher, emphasized the transformative impact of remote learning skills on education quality.

“The skills we gained are essential for modern education. The time we spent on handwritten tasks can now be saved, allowing us to share courses and supervise tests remotely,” Mico stated.

Florien Ukuribonye, Deputy Headteacher in charge of Studies, highlighted the strategic importance of the training in advancing the school’s digital capabilities.

“This training is a result of my request for teachers to learn advanced skills in delivering courses online. It also covers crucial lessons on digital footprint and online privacy, aligning with our shift towards an online education system,” Ukuribonye emphasized, recognizing the efforts by Internet Society Rwanda Chapter (ISOC Rwanda) that enabled their basic digital literacy and continue helping them to move to the next important steps.

Emmanuel Mfitumukiza, Chairperson of Internet Society Rwanda Chapter, emphasized the importance of equipping teachers with digital literacy and online safety skills.

“Privacy is an essential right, enabling individual autonomy and freedom of expression,” Mfitumukiza stated, underscoring the significance of responsible digital citizenship in today’s interconnected world.

“Empowering teachers with Remote learning and online safety skills is necessary for developing digital literacy and promoting student safety,” Mfitumukiza added, highlighting the broader benefits of such training initiatives.
