Basketball: APR WBBC defeats REG WBBC to win the zone 5 championship

APR WBBC defeated REG WBBC 82–71 to claim their first-ever Zone 5 Championship title.
The highly anticipated final between the two Rwandan giants took place on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, where the regional tournament had been underway for a week.
APR WBBC started the game strongly, with standout performances from Destiney Promise Philoxy and Yacine Diop, closing the first quarter with a 22–12 lead.
REG WBBC responded fiercely in the second quarter, narrowing the gap through key contributions from Faustine Mwizerwa and Kadidia Maiga, bringing the score within just two points (28–26).
With two minutes left in the half, APR WBBC stretched the lead again thanks to Italee Lucas and Assouma Uwizeye, ending the second quarter firmly ahead at 40–28.
REG WBBC fought back once more in the third quarter, powered by Kristina King and Gloriose Byukusenge, pushing the score to a tight 47–44.
In the final seconds of the quarter, Kamba Diakite added two crucial points assisted by Lance, allowing APR WBBC to maintain a slim 59–57 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the army side widened the gap again through the sharp shooting of Italee Lucas, Assouma Uwizeye, and the high-scoring Kamba Yoro.
The game ended 82–71 in favor of APR WBBC, securing their first Zone 5 Championship title in history.
Beyond lifting the trophy, APR WBBC also ended REG WBBC’s dominant run, stopping their 10–game winning streak against APR in all competitions.
Both teams will represent Rwanda at the upcoming Africa Women Basketball League, which will bring together 10 top clubs from across the continent. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Cairo, Egypt, from December 5 to 15, 2025.
