Nduhungirehe, Kenyatta discuss security in eastern DRC
Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe has held talks with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on efforts to advance the peace process in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Kenyatta is a member of the African Union’s Panel of Facilitators, which supports efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict in eastern DRC.
The talks, held on October 6, 2026, focused on the panel’s work and ongoing efforts under the African Union-led peace process, according to a statement from Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting followed a visit to Goma on October 5 by Kenyatta, former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde and former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi. The three met with senior AFC/M23 leaders to discuss the security situation in eastern DRC and efforts to advance peace in the region.
Kenyatta is familiar with the challenges surrounding the conflict in eastern DRC, having previously facilitated the Nairobi peace talks between the Congolese Government and armed groups operating in the country’s east.
The Nairobi process, however, stalled without reaching a lasting agreement, amid disagreements between the parties and the authorities in Kinshasa.
