President Paul Kagame has commended the significant role women continue to play in Rwanda’s development, noting that the country’s commitment to gender equality has strengthened their contribution to national progress.
The President extended his wishes to women as Rwanda joined the rest of the world in marking International Women’s Day on March 8, emphasizing that women’s achievements and contributions deserve recognition not only on the global celebration day but throughout the year.
In a message shared on his official X account, President Kagame highlighted that women’s resilience, skills, and leadership remain essential to demonstrating that meaningful national progress is achievable when inclusion and gender equality are promoted across all sectors of society.
According to the 2022 Population and Housing Census, Rwanda’s population stands at 13,246,394, with women accounting for 51.5% and men 48.5%.
Over the years, the Government of Rwanda has implemented a range of policies and programmes aimed at advancing women’s empowerment in areas such as education, economic participation, and leadership.
The 2003 Constitution of Rwanda, revised in 2015, guarantees women at least 30% representation in decision-making institutions.
In 2008, Rwanda’s Chamber of Deputies became the first parliament in the world with a female majority, with women occupying 61.25% of the seats, compared to a global average of 26.4%.
Women currently make up 41.6% of Rwanda’s Cabinet, while local government institutions are legally required to maintain at least 30% female representation.
These sustained efforts have positioned Rwanda as a country widely recognised internationally for promoting gender equality and inclusive governance.
